April 25 Council Polls: Ebonyi State House Of Assembly Approves N180m
Ebonyi State House of Assembly has approved the sum of 180 million naira for the conduct of the April 25 Local government elections in the State.
The approval was sequel to a request of the State Governor, Chief David Umahi for the money to be approved for Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) for the conduct of the elections across the 13 council areas in the State.
The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Francis Nwifuru said that the governor’s request was decent as it would enable the commission work effectively for a credible election.
Meanwhile, since EBSIEC released timetable and guidelines for the elections, the Secretariat of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state has become beehive of activities as aspirants and supporters throng the Party’s Secretariat on daily basis to purchase nomination forms for Chairmanship and Councillorship positions.
The PDP had also faulted insinuations in some quarters over the purported endorsements of the state Governor to some serving Council chairman, stressing that the Party’s primaries would be free and fair.
The chairman of the Party, Barrister Onyekachi Nwebonyi urged all interested aspirants to pick their nomination forms, insisting that the Governor has not endorsed any particular aspirant.
Both whether there were endorsements or not, the Governor may have some of his strong allies returned as council chairmen for the sake of 2023 elections.
Some of the perceived close associates to the governor include Sunday Eze (Ishielu); Eni Uduma Chima (Afikpo South); Felix Igboke (Onicha); Nkechinyere Iyioku( Ohaozara); Chinyere Nwogbaga (Ebonyi); Nora Aloh(Ezza North), Ogbonnaya Oko Enyim(Afikpo North).
Besides, these council chairmen have also performed admirably and enjoy the supports of their people. The opposition All Progressives Congress in the State is still contemplating whether to participate in the election or not, as there was no sign of political activities in the state.
