Partial Border closure: precautionary measure, not a Witch hunt – SSG.

From  Einstein Chukwu.

The partial closure of adjoining borders with Ebonyi state was not aimed at witch-hunting anybody but a measure to ensure the safety of Ebonyians in the light of escalating cases of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The Secretary to Ebonyi State Government, Dr. Kenneth Ugbala, stated this while addressing commuters at the Nkalagu-Idodo boundary area of the state in continuation of monitoring of movements in and out of the state.

The partial border shutdown is being implemented in response to what is fundamentally a problem of human movement that required the Government to do everything in its power to prevent the spread of COVID-19 disease by curtailing excessive movement and intermingling of humans.

He maintained that Ebonyi State Government was saddled with the responsibility of securing lives and properties of her citizenry as they are ready to wage war against the Coronavirus pandemic while ensuring the free flow of legitimate trade and travel as they are more courteous to more than a million trucks and vehicles they clear into Ebonyi State, each day.

The SSG administer the commuters to obey the instructions of the health personnel conducting the screening exercise to ensure free flow of traffic, warning that those who violated the law would bear the consequences of their actions.

Ebonyi State Committee on Anti-COVID-19 in the early hours of yesterday (Sunday, April 5), commenced monitoring and screening of vehicles plying the Nkalagu/Idodo border area with health officials.

Vehicular movements were allowed to start with the commuters passing through Abakaliki to Enugu to help decongest trucks for the free flow of traffic while private cars and buses that were not on essential services were made to return back to where they came from.

They continued the border patrol tradition and many travelers who wanted to sneak into the state were apprehended.
Security operatives were seen greeting one another with elbows and a bow instead of the usual handshakes.
