From Victor Nwegede, Sokoto
Non-Governmental organizations comprising Mothers Association, School Management Board Committee and Girls for Girls (G4G) education foundations have begun a campaign to promote girl child education in Sokoto State in collaboration with United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, UNICEF, and Sokoto Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB.
The organizations on Wednesday, jointly donated free items including exercise books, pencils, pens, chalk, detergents, bathing soap, among others to over 200 pupils of Abaskori Primary School in Goronyo, Sokoto State so as to encourage them picking up interest in schooling in the area.
The Chairman of the School Management Board Committee, Ibrahim Mohammed Ruma, said, the organizations were spurred to begin the campaign, donating stationery, other school items to pupils and students in order to promote a girl child education due to the way female folk declines interest in schooling in the area, "despite that formal education has taken a centre stage at almost every part of the country".
He further observed that the declination of females in formal education was majorly caused by the cultural practice of early marriage in the Northern states.
He however, advised parents to allow their children to go to school, pointed that the campaign would be of great benefit to the Northerners in the future. "If you go to the hospital, you hardly see our female working as a medical doctor, pharmacist, other professionals in health sector, and in almost education oriented jobs. It's just because, we don't allow our children from their early age to go to school especially our girls", the chairman observed.
On her part, the Women Leader of the board, Halimatu Mikailu, also stated that early marriage has made the Northerner women to become an education backwardness. "Mothers Association, G4G in collaboration with SMBC are here to present these items to you the pupils for free of charge, you have to make us proud, tell your brothers, your sisters and friends that education is the way to go now. Even, girl child education is also the way to go now, we are ready, and this time, we are in full operation, bring your wards to school for quality education. We must understand that, what light is to darkness, is what education is to ignorant human. Let's wake up from our slumber and embrace education". She as well called government, other spirited individuals, groups and organizations to help in bringing and developing schools in the hinterlands. She assured that her group would continue in the campaign to promote girl child education in the area, promised, to take the rally with her team to the streets, and different homes in the axis.
Stakeholders including a Staff of Sokoto Rima Basin Development Authority, Faruku Gwandu, the Headmaster of the Beneficiary School, Bello A. Habibu, Hajiya Safiya, the Public Relations Officer and the Mother General, Masa'uda Aliyu appreciated the organizations for bringing such programme in the area, as they promised to be an active party in the campaign.
