UMAHI SET TO TAKE HAWKERS OFF THE LAGOS STREET.
Governor Umahi street hawkers empowerment, second phase to commence soon.
Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. David Nweze Umahi says his government has plans to empower about two thousand Ebonyi Street hawkers in Lagos in the next six months.
The Governor made this known at a one-day workshop at the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism in Lagos.
The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Bernard Odo said about one hundred and thirty people had already benefitted from the programme in the first phase with ten selected from each of the thirteen local government areas of the State.
He made it clear that to qualify, the beneficiary must produce letter of identification from his traditional ruler or priest noting that initial sum of two hundred and fifty thousand naira would be given and if the money was judiciously utilized, another two hundred and fifty thousand naira would be added to the beneficiary.
The Commissioner for Economic Empowerment and Job Creation, Chief Sabinus Nwankwegu, commended the State Governor, Engr. David Nweze Umahi for his achievements so far, noting that the Governor has the intention to make millionaires of Ebonyi street hawkers in Lagos.
He informed intended beneficiaries that a Memorandum of Understanding would be signed between them and the Government, and advised them to open an account as the money would be transferred through their bank accounts.
Responding, the Vice President Ebonyi State Development Association, Lagos Branch, Mr. Joseph Egbo appreciated the State Governor’s effort at eradicating poverty in the state and assured of their support to make the programme a success.
