Mugabe's 37-year Reign Ends.
There was wild jubilation and celebration all over Zimbabwe, as the 37 - year reign of President Robert Mugabe came to an end. Mugabe voluntarily resigned his position as president, amid growing tension in the leadership of the country.
It was gathered that President Mugabe resigned in order to escape being impeached by the country's parliament. His resignation was announced by the speaker of Zimbabwe's parliament, Mr Jacob Mudenda.
The political instability in Zimbabwe began weeks ago, when President Mugabe announced the sacking of his vice, Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa from office, in a bid to install his wife, Grace Mugabe as his successor. His action triggered wide condemnation and created political tension and instability in the country.
In a bid to douse the tension already created and to avert the impending crises, the military announced the takeover of power from Mugabe and subsequently put him on house arrest. he however, vowed to remain in power despite the military action. but it seems all were grievously against him as his party, the ZANU PF party suspended him and his wife and appointed his erstwhile deputy as the new leader of the party.
The 93-yr old Mugabe, who has been in power since the country's independence in 1980, bowed out of power after series of protest against his continued stay in power by the people of Zimbabwe and their support for the military since they announced the takeover of power, and subsequently the current impeachment threat made by the country's parliament.
It is however, worthy of note that the power struggle in Zimbabwe ended seamlessly without bloodshed unlike what was witnessed in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. It is certain that the train of revolution against the sit-tight leaders in Africa is still moving, where next will it land? Cameroon you may say? your guess is as good as mine.celplusmedia.blogspot.com
