ENUGU ASSEMBLY URGED FG TO FIX ENUGU AIRPORT.
The Enugu state House of Assembly has condemned the state of Deplorable condition of facilities and structures of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
The condemnation was made on the floor of the house, following a motion of urgent public importance brought before it the member representing Nsukka East constituency, Hon.Cninedu Christian Nwamba.
Hon Nwamba ,while presenting his motion, told his colleagues that the poor state of structures and facilities at the Airport are in a deplorable state and as such needed an urgent attention from the federal authority, hence the airport has been accorded an international status from the federal government.
He however, thanked the federal Government for upgrading the Airport to assume international status, but he reminded them that the international accorded the has reflected on the structures and facilities at the airport. he reiterated that the Akanu Ibiam international Airport is the only acclaimed international Airport in the entire South East Geo-political zone, and such should be given the deserved attention, it should not be allowed to be grounded as it will reduce the federal internally generated revenue acurable from the airport to the federal coffers.
Contributing to the motion, the member representing Enugu South Urban, Hon. Obinna Okenwa said that the motion was timely, as the blown off roof , the shattered ceilings and the cracked walls poses a serious danger to the users of the Airport and the staffs alike. he said that such structural decay is a national embarrassment and did not depict the airport as an international one.
Hon. Okenwa maintained that Akanu Ibiam International Airport fell short of international airport when compared to other international airports across the country. He wondered why the federal government is neglecting the airport just as it has neglected the federal roads in Enugu state that made the state government to undertake its rehabilitation and reconstruction in order to save lives.
On his part, the member representing Awgu North constituency, Hon Ude - Okoye , suggested that the National Assembly committees on Aviation should take an urgent action aimed at making the Federal Government undertake the immediate rehabilitation of the Airport to forestall the impending danger the dilapidated structures imposed to the users and the staffs therein.
The Speaker of the state Assembly, Hon Uchenna Edward Ubosi, on his part lamented that the international airport is in a total sorry state, adding that planes do not land int the airport beyond 6pm. he said that any international airport where planes cannot land after 6pm should not be regarded as international airport
